Pop Messe enters its seventh year as a different festival than it has been so far. Starting this year, it becomes a new, independent chapter, produced in collaboration with fource.cz. This isn’t just another edition with a new poster. It’s a full restart. From August 6 to 8, 2026, the Velodrome grounds in Brno will host something that rarely shares a stage.
A Festival That Refuses to Fit the Word “Pop”
Just look at the lineup’s headline names. Einstürzende Neubauten, German industrial pioneers, build music out of scrap metal and construction tools. Alongside them stand Overmono, KiNK, and Ben UFO, absolute leaders of current club electronica. Anna von Hausswolff adds her gothic, organ-driven drone from Sweden. Finally, Richard Müller rounds it out as a Slovak pop institution. This pairing isn’t a booking mistake. Instead, Pop Messe defines itself as a genre crossroads, one that pushes past the usual idea of what “pop” even means.
Beyond Music: Pop Talks
main lineup alone might not convince. This year, Pop Messe strengthens its Pop Talks strand, connecting music with themes from media, society, and current cultural shifts.
The program includes the documentary Ztracený architekt Ernst Wiesner, a portrait of a key figure in modern Brno architecture. Wiesner shaped the face of interwar Brno. During World War II, however, he was forced to flee the country because of his Jewish heritage, and for years, his name nearly disappeared from public memory until it was rediscovered. Similarly personal in tone, the documentary Milan Kundera: Od Žertu k Bezvýznamnosti offers a portrait of the writer, who became one of the leading figures in world culture.
The program also features a Deník N debate, Kam směřuje nejen český pop?, which traces the transformation of pop culture from the MTV era through streaming platforms, algorithms, and TikTok, all the way to artificial intelligence. Music, architecture, literature, and media all meet in one space here, right at the same crossroads where the concept of pop itself stands.
History That Adds Context
Pop Messe hasn’t built this reputation from nothing. Previous editions hosted names like Hudson Mohawke, Max Cooper, Young Fathers, Skepta, and Son Lux. Local legends like Iva Bittová and Dunaj joined them too. At the time, the fanzine Full Moon Zine wrote that Pop Messe was on track. It was becoming one of the best urban festivals in the Czech Republic. This year’s edition seems more ambitious than ever before.
Space as Part of the Experience
The venue itself carries its own story. The Velodrome was originally a cycling stadium within Brno’s BVV exhibition grounds. For three days in August, it transforms into a festival space. Much like the architecture explored in the Ernst Wiesner documentary, this space tells its own story. It shows how a structure built for one purpose can take on an entirely new life.
